The new Ultegra R8000 carbon SPD-SL pedals, the step height is reduced by 0.7 mm. The purpose of this is to extend the lever effect. Altough, Shimano has reduced the weight with 12g compared to the previous PD-6800 design (now 248g). The pedals are also available with 4 mm longer axles.
The carbon body keeps the weight low while providing a very rigid platform.
