Absolute once in a lifetime opportunity, this is a excuisite rare bike. See hereby the review from Menno Grootjans in magazine Fiets dd. oktober 2023.
What celeste is to Bianchi, the color ramato is to Wilier Triestina. It is a calling card that gives their bikes a very recognizable look, and a truly Italian feel. Ideal as an eye-catcher for the showroom.
Ramato, or “coppery”: that's what Wilier Triestina called the color of their frame. The Italian brand introduced that almost luminous shade of copper back in the 1940s. At some point the color faded away, but nowadays Wilier is increasingly reverting to its history. For example, we already saw the color on Filippo Pozzato's Cento10 Air and Sylvain Chavanel's Cento10 Pro. And over the last decade, painting techniques have improved so much that even a carbon frame can get this “steel look.
Wilier still sells steel Superleggeras, by the way, under the motto the past the future. The model is available from 4500 euros - with Campagnolo, of course. The steel frame is still made with lugs, then fully chromed and finished with a translucent paint. This is called Cromovelato, and it is a sight to behold. Other brands from northern Italy also use this technique. It shows that the Italians not only have a genuine concern for the past, but also know how to “market” it - a terrible word, but one that gets the point across.
'Very few used'
The one you see in the photos is really getting on in age, though: this Superleggera is from 1987. In a slightly different version, this bike was once in the showroom at Wilier. In our country this model is a rarity, but such a Superleggera is a kind of Italian Champion Mondial: cleverly made, but very many of them were put into circulation. And internationally, these bikes are widely offered in various sizes and versions.
Through the importer in Belgium, an English-language email went around to Wilier dealers in late 2021. 'I sell a Wilier Road bike from 1987. Very few used and in excellent condition. Frame size 51×51, serial 2035 tubes Columbus SL. Full groupset Campagnolo Super Record (last series pantographed Wilier), Mavic rims S.S.C., Selle San Marco Concor saddle, stem/handlebar 3T, freewheel Regina oro 6s, chain Sedis France, Vittoria tubulars. Delivered with Silca pump ramato color.'

It wasn't a bargain, but you can have so many 'fat' carbon racers in your store, a shiny classic like this still stands out ... And so the bike moved from Rossano Veneto, home of Wilier Triestina, to Limbricht. It could have gone straight into the showroom there too, but the new owner had other plans.
Math and Tullio
Meet Ralph Salden. His store, Math Salden Wielersport, exists sixty years this year. Father Math began repairing bicycles and mopeds from home in 1963. In 1967 he moved into new store premises on the Provincialeweg in Limbricht. The store is still located there today. Salden initially sold all types of bicycles, only later specializing in sporty models. In those years Campagnolo was the name of the game. Math personally traveled to Italy in 1979, where he met founder Tullio Campagnolo.
When the parts brand turned fifty in 1983, the Italians celebrated with an anniversary edition of the Super Record group. Aluminum parts with gold accents, lots of engravings, beautiful in a box including pedals, seat post and hubs (nowadays such a box 'does' around 3500 euros). Naturally, Salden ordered such a group. But it then remained untouched in the warehouse for years. Until the Superleggera arrived - the group would fit perfectly. So we converted it. Only it turned out to be a bit tricky. Other wheels with the correct hubs had to be fitted. These were found in Great Britain, but due to the Brexit, shipping became a drag and a hefty amount of import duty had to be paid: about 600 euros.

Fine details everywhere
Champion bike
But meanwhile, almost two years after the Superleggera arrived in Limbricht, Salden has finished it: complete with 53/42 crankset, 6-speed 13-26, Mavic GP4 wheelset with Challenge Criterium tubes, Iscaselle Giro d'Italia saddle, stitched leather handlebar ribbon and a super-exclusive Silca pump, and (of course, we'd almost say) finished in the color ramato. In total, the bike weighs 9.68 kilograms. If you look closely, you can see that the copper finish has become a bit thin here and there - if you get really close, you can even see some craquelé.
